ORGAN COMMITTEE

The committee for the building of the organ was composed of the Rev. J. Henry Kohler, Mrs. Arthur (Faye) Bell, Mr. A. Ken Harmon, Mr. Lessel K. Hart, Mrs. Winston (Lib) Miller, Mr. Otis Patton, and the Rev. Paul Smith. Rev. Henry Kohler, who was a former pastor of the church, had retired and was residing in the city and attending FUMC. He was the original chair, and upon his resignation was named chair emeritus. Mr. Lessel Hart then became committee chair.

BUILDING OF THE ORGAN

Mr. Gerhard Brunzema of Casavant Frères was the tonal director for the building of our organ. Mr. Eugene La Plante was project manager, and Mr. Michael Payne of Charlotte, North Carolina, was the area representative and did the installation of the organ. Opus 3336 was built at the Casavant factory in St. Hyacinth, Quebec, Canada, and fully tested before shipping. The final installation, voicing and tuning took approximately three weeks.

DID YOU KNOW …

… that there are 145 “controls” on our organ console — such as stops, couplers, thumb and toe pistons, expression pedals, etc.?

… that there are three “rooms” or chambers of pipes on the third floor? One large chamber on the east side of the chancel houses the Grand and Pédale organs; two chambers on the west side house the Chœur and Récit organs.

… that four blowers supply the wind for our organ? Three are on the first floor with ducts taking the wind to the third floor organ chambers. One is on the third floor to supply the horizontal trumpet.

… that when the organ was first built it cost $102,080.00? Now, due to additions and improvements to the organ — as well as appreciation — replacement value is over $650,000.00.
