HomeMissionsOur Programs                                       2011 date will be announced soon!

Three youth and one adult from First UMC participated in the Bishopville Salkehatchie Camp, June 20-27, directed by Rev. Tommy Wilkes. Photos will appear here soon!

Our entire church family seems to become involved in the Pee Dee Camp, which is this week, June 27-July 3 and hosted by our church. Several of our members will also be direct participants in this camp. (Read the article to the right.) We look forward to many returning friends who will be with us, and to the many new participants who will have their first experience at the Pee Dee Camp of Salkehatchie.

Please pray for the 2009 Salkehatchie Summer Service ministry.

Salkehatchie Summer Service has been dedicated to meeting the needs of "the least of these" for around 30 years.

Rev. John Wesley Culp, a former pastor of First United Methodist Church (1993-1997) founded this ministry to help those in need of better housing conditions. Youth (and adults) from across the state of South Carolina -- and some from neighboring states, as well -- join together to repair homes and make them suitable habitations. Youth learn the meaning of Christian servanthood.

From its humble beginnings with one camp, there are now 42 camps in South Carolina (and one in North Carolina).

First United Methodist Church is grateful to be able to serve as host church for the Pee Dee Camp, and we typically have 165 to 200 people participating in our camp each summer. Twelve local families (in the Marlboro County area) are blessed to have their homes improved each summer.

Rev. Neil Flowers, pastor of Beulah United Methodist Church in the Sandy Run community of Gaston (near Columbia) directs the Pee Dee Camp.

You are invited to view the Salkehatchie Summer Service website.

Salkehatchie Summer Service is a ministry of the South Carolina Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church.
